This week's message:

(8-9-09) “The Green Eye Monster”

Mark 15:10—When Jesus was before Pilate, Pilate tried several times to release Jesus—“For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.”

Definition of Envy:  “Anger or discontent at the good fortune or possession of another”
The word literally means “to look at with evil intent..”

The Greek Translation: “a painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with the desire to possess the same advantage.”

Envy doesn’t just want to gain, he wants the other person to suffer loss.

1.    The Heart of Envy:  an evil eye—It is a sin that begins in the eyes and longs to possess what others have.

James 3:16—For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”

“Disorder”—instability and irrational

2.    Envy Laid Bare—How does envy get started?
  
a.    Resenting God’s Goodness
b.    Making God’s Business Our Business
John 21:18-21—“If I want him to live until I come again, how does that concern you?  Follow me!”
            
3.    The Reality of Envy—Envy paints the inside of the heart an ugly black.
a.    Un-Healthy—Prov. 14:30 “It is healthy to be content, but envy will rot your bones.”
Envy Cripples you in at least 5 ways:
    *Our Ability to Examine ourselves
    *Our Relationships
    *Our Respect for authority/leaders
    *Our Ability to enjoy what we have
    *Our Spiritual Growth
b.    Un-Wise—Job 5:2 “Envy and jealousy will kill a simple fool.”
c.    Un-Loving—1 Cor. 13:4 “Love is patient. Love is kind.  It does not envy….”

4.    The Treatment for the Disease of Envy
a.    Stop Comparing—1 Cor. 4
b.    Stop Complaining—
c.    Stay Content—Prov. 6:35 he will not “rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
Ro. 12:15 “rejoice with those who rejoice”
